Everybody loves to have a beautiful smile as it attracts attention and inspires confidence. Of course it’s not everybody who is endowed with beautiful teeth that promote a natural smile. Veneers are good dental solutions that can help in compensating for your teeth defects and greatly boosting your appearance.

Veneers are ultra-thin dental shells made of porcelain (ceramic) or some composite resin material bonded to the front of your teeth. They are placed to brighten teeth, mask discolorations, and to boost your smile. The dental procedure generally requires no anesthesia (or very little) and are done on an out-patient basis at the dentist’s office in about two appointments.

The Procedure

Veneers are made of ultra-thin porcelain shells or composite resin custom-made so that they fit over your teeth to provide an attractive, natural look. They are excellent at fixing stained, chipped, worn down, misaligned, or abnormally spaced teeth. The dentist removes a small layer from the surface of your tooth to permit for the veneer placement. A tooth impression is then taken and sent to a dental lab where a dental veneer is custom-made so that it fits your mouth and the tooth. Veneer bonding is done using resin cement.

After they are designed and fabricated in the dental lab, both porcelain and composite veneers can be bonded to your teeth in single visit at the dentist’s office. If your dentist is using the modern CAD/CAM technology, the procedure can be completed in a single visit where the impression and development is done as you wait and installed thereafter.

The Benefits

Your dental veneers can be very natural looking and quite beautiful on your face if done properly. The color of veneers may be selected so that it makes even teeth that are dark appear whiter. Compared to dental crowns, veneers don’t require extensive teeth shaping prior to the procedure.

Improved and Realistic Appearance

A major feature of porcelain veneers that is contributing to their growing popularity is their optic characteristics. Porcelain, being a ceramic has lots of similar properties to the natural covering of your teeth: the enamel. Due to this property, porcelain veneers appear very realistic and natural.

Porcelain veneers are excellent if you have dental flaws such as discolored teeth, crooked teeth, or you have small gaps between your teeth. Veneers have the potential of dramatically changing your smile, helping to improve your self-confidence.

Being a ceramic, porcelain is “glass-like”; the surface is impervious and extremely smooth. This makes your porcelain veneers resistant to ordinary permanent stains. You will not have to be concerned about wine, coffee, or cigarette stains!

Care for Veneers

Dental experts recommend flossing and daily brushing just like you normally do to your regular teeth using fluoride toothpaste that is non-abrasive. You may want to consider limiting your intake of coffee and other foods that can cause staining.

If you’re considering veneers, it is wise to consult your dentist and ensure that you fully understand every aspect of the process, aftercare and cost implications. Remember that at some point, your veneers will need replacing. However, proper oral hygiene helps them to last longer.

Although getting veneers has several potential risks, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. When skillfully done, porcelain veneers can restore your smile, boost your appearance as they are natural-looking. With proper care, porcelain veneers can serve you for up to 25 years. Similarly, with great care and good hygiene, composite veneers can last anywhere from 4 to 8 years. It’s important, however, to note that veneers may not be suitable for everybody, so talk with your dental expert whether they are suitable for your teeth.
